[edit] What is a Tamagotchi?A Tamagotchi is a virtual reality pet that must be cared for properly in order for it to survive. Basically it is a hand held computer game and the challenge is to keep it alive for as long as possible by providing the appropriate care, such as feeding it, playing with it and cleaning up its mess! Unfortunately the pet will die after a while but you can produce a new one almost immediately. Once the on screen egg has hatched you must take care of them whilst they go through their life stages - baby, child and adulthood. The buttons underneath the screen help you do this by providing a number of options such as feeding, putting to bed and awakening, giving medicine if they're ill, disciplining them, playing with them and checking things like their age and level of happiness. [edit] Idea and HistoryTamagotchi's were produced and launched in Japan during 1996, the tale that accompanies the toy is that a man named Professor Banzo found thousands of little aliens in a river who appeared in trouble. He rescued them and created little circular shells for them to live in so they would be protected. Thus finding a new generation of toys for children to look after and play with. A lady called Aki Maita created the little toys and sold the idea to Bandai who are still producing them today. During the initial launch, tens of millions were sold and people all over the world became addicted to these little creatures. There have been many Tamagotchi ranges brought out over the years including: original Tamagotchi (1996), Digimon (1997), Tamagotchi Angel (1997), Tamagotchi Garden (1998), Tamagotchi Ocean (1998), Tamaotchi (1998), Easy Tamagotchi (1998), Santa Claus Tamagotchi, Caveman Tamagotchi, Tamagotchi Connexion (2004), Tamagotchi Connexion Version 2 (2005). In 2004 the Tamagotchi Connexion (known as Tamagotchi Connection in the US and Tamagotchi Plus in Japan) was launched in Europe selling nearly 1 million products, this virtual pet had a number of extra functions and could interact with other Tamagotchi's. After a successful year, Tamagotchi Connexion version 2 was launched in 2005. [edit] AppearanceTamagotchi's are small circular/egg shaped and come in a variety of styles and colours. They tend to have a solid background colour with a pattern overlapping and a title at the top of the toy. The square screen is in the center of the Tamagotchi and the three buttons that control the way you care for the pet are situated underneath the screen in a 'V' shape. An important part of the toy is the key chain that encourages owners to keep their pet with them at al times. The screen in the middle shows the outline of a small creature who moves around the area, originally the screens were black and white but have since developed into multi colour displays which makes the toy more appealing to look at. At the top and bottom of the screen are symbols that allow you to care for the creature by navigating through them using the buttons.
