Spiderman

Spider man is a fictional character and is the alter ego of shy teenager Peter Parker, who was bitten by a radioactive spider and given superhuman powers. Spiderman first appeared in the comic book Amazing Fantasy #15 in August 1962. Created for Marvel Comics by comic book writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, Spiderman was such a hit that Amazing Fantasy was renamed Amazing Spiderman. Partly due to the success of Spiderman, Marvel Comics became the dominant comic book publisher of the early 1970's.

Spiderman remains one of the most recognisable superheroes today, along with Superman and Batman, and has appeared in many medias including two successful films (and a third on the way). The first film was released on May 3rd 2002 and earned more than $403 million dollars at U.S. box offices. The second film was released in 2004 and was 2004's second most financially successful film. The third film is currently in production and expected to be released in 2007. Spiderman has also appeared in more than 500 newspapers worldwide and as a TV series. As a result of the characters popularity, Spiderman toys are widely available and the variety existing is endless.

The Spiderman story

After Peter's parents died in a deliberate plane crash, Peter was left in the care of his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. He grew into a lonely, shy teenager, unpopular with those his own age. His passion was science, though his outstanding intelligence led to further ridicule from fellow students, in particular Flash Thompson. At 15 years old, Peter attended a science exhibit and was bitten by a spider that had been irradiated. As a result, Peter gained the powers of a spider that were magnified by the radiation. These superhuman abilities gave Peter superhuman strength, the ability to stick to most surfaces and spin webs, superhuman reflexes and balance and an intuitive sense for danger.

These superhuman abilities gave Peter the fame and fortune he had desired, however these new powers went to his head and he allowed a burglar to rob the studio he worked for, when he could have prevented it. The burglar then went on to murder his Uncle Ben and Peter realised he was partly responsible for his death. Peter fully understood what his Uncle Ben had once told him: 'With great power, comes great responsibility', and Peter decided to use his new powers to become a hero and fight evil. However, despite having these amazing powers, Peter still could not resolve his personal problems and his powers seemed to complicate all his relationships. His secret life as a masked hero meant he made many enemies and often his personal relationships were put at risk. Gwen Stacy was Peter's first romantic interest, but she was murdered by his arch enemy the Green Goblin. Peter later grows close to Mary Jane Watson and ends up marrying her.
