Scooby strings were a huge craze throughout 2004, especially in Britain, America (where they call it Bondoogle), France and the Netherlands. Although the craze has slowed this year people are still crazy about these little plastic stands and are always looking to find new projects to make. There are a number of knots you can do with Scooby strings, some quite basic and easy to learn whilst others are pretty difficult to get the hang of! The best stitch to learn first is the Square stitch as this forms the basis of majority of the other stitches; once you have mastered this you can do anything. Each stitch does however take time and practice if you want to be an expert.

You can create a number of exciting designs or projects depending on what your imagination can come up with. The most common projects are key rings; these are so easy to make, you simply need to leave a loop before you begin your stitch so you can attach it to the ring. Other frequently made pieces are small animals, scoubidou hearts, flowers and badges. There are no limits with what you can invent.

The basic stitches already created are Square stitch, Circle stitch, Chinese Staircase stitch, Triangle stitch and Butterfly stitch. These projects are easy to learn and can be used to make most other projects. Brick stitch, Superbrick stitch, Twist stitch, Cobra stitch, Corkscrew stitch, Quad stitch and Tornado stitch are the more advanced knots and take a little longer to master. Once you know these stitches you can do anything with scoubidou strings.

Scoubidou knotting has been around since the 1960's when a huge craze began in France and spread to other areas of Europe. After a while the strings became unfashionable, people stopped playing with them and they slowly fizzled out altogether. However the techniques were still occasionally used with other craft materials. Many of the popular knotting techniques used today were also used during the 60's however new creations have been developed since then due to the increase in colours and additional accessories you can purchase with scoobies, for example wobbly eyes.

It was near the beginning of 2004 when Scooby doo strings hit Britain by storm; children were creating their inventions at school, at home and always seeking to learn new techniques and how to make animals and accessories. Their popularity was unbelievable but they were eventually banned my many primary and junior schools. Since 2004 the craze has slowed down and they are not the talk of every school anymore, however, many people still play with the strings.

Scooby strings are round plastic tubes that come in a variety of lengths and colours; some plain, some with sparkly bits on, some vibrant and some pastel coloured. They each have a hollow center in case you want to insert thin wire to make the projects sturdier. This is particularly important when it comes to making animals because you want to make sure their legs and tails remain upright! With scoubidou's possibilities are endless, try having a go at making a friendship bracelet, a key ring, a necklace, a heart, a zipper pull or even an animal if you're feeling brave. Why not even try inventing something yourself.

There are many manufacturers of scoobies and they are sold in packs often with a few accessories, such as beads and key rings. The original scoubidou packs will say the word Scoubidou on the front and will have the producer's details. Unfortunately, most packs are copies of the originals therefore the quality tends to be lower and they can snap quite easily.
