Polly PocketFrom ToyReview
[edit] Who's Polly Pocket?Polly Pocket is a line of tiny plastic dolls and accessories produced by Mattel that have been popular for many years. The design of the doll has changed considerably from the original, made in 1983. The original Polly and friends were miniature characters made from a hard plastic with unrealistic plastic hair and clothes. The new dolls are slightly larger with more life-like features, actual clothes and appear more realistic overall. Polly and her friends always wear stylish, 'Polly Stretch' fabric outfits which makes changing them fun. There are so many tiny accessories to accompany each doll but their small size does mean they are easily lost however! Polly lives in the fictitious town of Pollyville, with all her friends, including Becky, Billy, Cindy, Lila, Grace, Lauren, Lea and many more. Pollyville has stores and accessories that can be organised on a large mat/map. Different sets can be purchased, e.g. Fun Fair and Animal Wonderland. Additional products can be bought to provide an environment for the characters such as the 'Snow Cool Hotel Playset' where a hotel opens up to create a ski location. Another popular product is the 'Quick-Clik House of Style', a beautiful house with different colourful rooms and lifelike features. [edit] Fashion PollyFashion Polly is a popular spin-off from the original Polly Pocket dolls. Polly has left her days of living in a miniature compact home and has discovered the world of fashion and beauty. In this theme Polly has all the make-up accessories you could need and many trendy outfits to slide on. The clothes are again made out of the 'Polly Stretch' fabric that makes it so easy to change her. Polly is about three inches in height which is still small for a doll and she has loads of fashionable friends. The dolls in this collection have real hair and bendy joints making them much more realistic as characters. [edit] Dolls, Toys and CharactersPolly Pocket dolls are tiny, plastic fashion figures with life-like facial features. Each can be dressed in a wide range of clothes and accessories to impress the others living in Pollyville. Instead of traditional cloth clothing, Polly Pocket has unique 'Polly Stretch' plastic, clothes that can be put on and taken off the dolls. There are many different dolls to choose from and different settings to play with. Settings include Animal Wonderland, Babysitter Compacts, Compact Playsets, Enchanted Storybooks, Fun Fair, Fuzzy Friends, Happening Hair Series, Jewelled Compacts, Keepsake Series, Out 'n About Series, Pet Parade Series, Pollyville, Pony Parade Series, Pretty Me Series, Princess Treasures, Rings and Ring Cases, Sparkle Surprise, Totally Flowers and Vacation Fun. There are also many different accessories, characters and animals (such as horses) to choose from, infact Polly's world is filled with so much stuff that she will never become boring to play with! [edit] Brand HistoryPolly Pocket was first created by in 1983 by Chris Wiggs. The original design was made for his daughter and Chris used a powder compact to make a small house for the little doll. Polly Pocket arrived in stores in 1989 when Bluebird Toys licensed the product. A distribution arrangement was held between Bluebird Toys and Mattel in the early 1990s. Bluebird Toys experienced several take-over attempts when production began to slow and in 1998, Mattel finally purchased them. Polly Pocket was redesigned in 1999 by Mattel and a whole new series of collectible products were created. Polly became slightly larger and more life-like than the original Polly designed by Chris. The name Polly Pocket actually comes from the original Polly Pocket toys that fit in pocket size cases. Mattel also introduced Fashion Polly later in 1999. Many similarities can be seen between the new Polly and Mattel's Barbie. In 2001, Mattel released compact size Polly Pocket items; these are copies of the original items but are populated by the new Polly Pocket dolls. Between 1989 and 1998, there were more than 350 different Polly Pockets made, these tiny dolls and their accessories are now a popular collectors item. However since Polly is still available in stores today, she has not yet reached her peak collectible value. Polly has come a long way since her first home in a powder compact; toys such as the 'Totally Bead-iful Jewellery Maker' prove the popularity of the product and show her development over the years. She is no longer a tiny doll in a tiny house, she is a whole world of imagination that is increasing every year. Rating: ![]() My children love Polly pockets, but I do believe they should put out more boy one's, this i know because my son loves to play with them as well, and if there were boys that could dress up as firemen, army guys, police and on and on it would be nice to see. Lots of boys like them as well and if the boy ones were around it would make my little guy pretty happy and maybe even quite a few more. Comment by nat, Tuesday 7th October 2008
