Why the Dolls were Introduced

Barbie was launched in 1959 by Mattel and has remained a best-selling brand ever since. However, in 2001 her place in the market was threatened with the introduction of the Bratz brand. MGA Entertainment, who launched the Bratz Dolls, hit on something big and the Bratz popularity rocketed all around the world. The dolls with a 'passion for fashion' were designed to appeal to what became known as 'tween' girls - those aged between child and teen. MGA Entertainment had created something that Mattel had been trying to do for a long time - get 'tween' girls to play with dolls. Responding to the new found competition in the market, Mattel launched a new line of Barbie dolls known as My Scene in the hope of winning back their place as market leaders. My Scene dolls were not introduced to replace the traditional Barbie line, but to compliment it and appeal to a different age group. The range has been successful but the 'dolls war' continues - only time will tell if the Barbie range has what it takes to fight off the competition!

For over 40 years Barbie has been a leader in the doll market. Since her launch, Barbie has been seen in countless fairytale themes and has also tried her luck at being an astronaut and a pilot, among other careers! When the Bratz Dolls were introduced in 2001, Barbie had her work cut out to hold on to the popularity she had become accustomed to. Mattel decided to launch a new line of Barbie dolls, called My Scene, to compliment the traditional Barbie line. The My Scene line attempts to appeal to 'tween' girls, those who have grown out of the fairytale Barbie and want a trendy brand to play with. The My Scene dolls wear heavy make-up, have extra-pouty lips and own a trendy wardrobe. It has been said that the My Scene dolls resemble Bratz and it went as far as MGA trying to sue Mattel for copying their design. However, though the facial features may bear some resemblance, the My Scene dolls are taller than the Bratz dolls so the rivals are not able to share wardrobes.

My Scene Barbie is joined in this product line by her stylish friends Chelsea, Nolee, Madison, Delancey (among others) and some boy dolls including Bryant and Hudson. Dolls modelled after Hollywood stars are also included in the range; Lindsay Lohan for example joins the others in their stylish escapades. The My Scene dolls all have their own unique style and chic attitude; Chelsea is 'original and funky', Madison is 'ultra uptown and urban' and Delancey is 'edgy, funky and super colourful'. The dolls all come with loads of stylish accessories and some fab outfits - appropriate for life in the big city! The three original My Scene girls were Barbie, Madison and Chelsea. Nolee, Bryant and Hudson were introduced by Mattel in 2003, as were My Scene boys River and Sutton. New editions of the dolls have since been introduced and new characters have joined them (including Kenzie and Ellis). The range looks set to expand further and has given the Bratz line some competition of their own! The 'dolls war' will continue as a fight for market leader remains, however this just gives children everywhere a bigger choice of products!

Appearance

My Scene dolls were introduced to appeal to 'tween' girls, and therefore the appearance of these dolls is a huge factor contributing to their success - they have to have something that their target audience will think is trendy and not too 'fairytale' like the traditional Barbie line. Mattel has successfully created a chic, modern collection of teenage girls and boys with My Scene dolls - something that 'tween' girls can easily relate and aspire to. The dolls do resemble their rivals - the Bratz, with their oversized eyes, pouty lips and heavy make-up but the My Scene characters have more realistically proportioned bodies and are taller than the Bratz Dolls.

My Scene dolls always wear stylish outfits to match their unique personalities and have a classy feel about them. They all come with heaps of accessories and are always ready to hit the town! Barbie does not feature as the main character in this collection; her friends are equally popular. This is different from the traditional Barbie line, where Barbie would always be the most popular character and other toys were introduced around her. The My Scene dolls are all extremely beautiful but unrealistically skinny - they have been successful so far but their future depends on the degree of competition, especially from the Bratz Dolls!
