My Little Pony is a range of collectable toys that were produced in the early 1980's and are still popular children's toys today. Almost every year since 1982, Hasbro (the manufacturers of the product) have launched a new collection of between 4 and 6 ponies under a particular theme, such as Earth Ponies or Rainbow Ponies. Each pony has a coloured body, mane and tail and a unique symbol on their hips such as a group of flowers or hearts. Many accessories have been brought out to accompany the toy ponies like clothes, jewellery, play sets and furniture.

History and Original Ponies

The idea of My little Pony arose from an existing product produced in 1981 entitled My Pretty Pony. She was a light brown colour with a blonde mane and tail and had slightly clumpier features than the well-known My Little Pony figures. She was later developed into a more appealing colour (pink) and was given a symbol on her hips that was also used with My Little Pony.

During 1982, manufacturers Hasbro produced the first six of the My Little Pony Range unaware of the success they had to come. The six originals were Earth Ponies called Cotton Candy - a pink bodied pony with pink hair and white dots on her hips as her symbol, Blossom - a purple bodied pony with purple hair identified by her small white flowers, Blue Belle - a blue bodied pony with purple mane and tail and purple stars as her icon, Minty - a green bodied, white haired pony with green clovers as her signature, Snuzzle - a grey bodied, pink haired pony with her symbol being a group of pink hearts similar to the pink My Pretty Pony. Finally there was Butterscotch - A gold bodied, gold haired pony with gold butterflies as her symbol on her hips.

In 1983 Hasbro introduced another selection of Earth Ponies called Applejack, Seashell, Bubbles and Bow Tie; again each pony had a unique colour and symbol to identify them. During this year we also met My Little Pony Unicorns and Pegasus for the first time. Sunbeam, Glory, Twilight and Moondancer were the four unicorns that each had a horn and an additional colour in their hair. Firefly and Medley were the first Pegasus and had small wings on their backs. Both unicorns and Pegasus continued the tradition of having a unique symbol to differentiate them from one another.

Over the next 10 years many new pony ranges were introduced: Rainbow Ponies, Baby Ponies, Sea Ponies, Princess Ponies, Big Brother Ponies, Twinkle-eyed Ponies, So Soft Ponies, Baby Sea Ponies, Flutter Ponies, Brush 'n Grow Ponies, Pony friends, Sunshine Ponies, Newborn Ponies, Sparkle Ponies, Candy Cane Ponies, Tropical Ponies, Baby Ballerina Ponies, Teeny Tiny Ponies, Sweet Kisses Ponies, Bridal Beauty, Birthday Pony and many many more. A television series ran from 1986 - 1987 and a movie was also released in 1986 entitled My Little Pony The Movie.

Pony Types

Each My Little Pony is a different colour and has a symbol to uniquely identify them. Each new range of My Little Ponies was different from the previous as well; Earth Ponies were the originals and came with a flower-shaped brush and ribbon. Unicorns then appeared in the same style but with a horn on their foreheads to identify them as unicorns and Pegasus arrived with wings and an extra colour shade in their hair; both types came equipped with a star shaped brush and a ribbon and some had a bent front leg. Rainbow Ponies were next with four shades of colour in their hair, then Sea Ponies whose appearances were very different from the previous ranges as they had seahorse tails.

Although each new pony range was developed into a new, exciting theme, their traditional shape, hair, symbols and purpose has remained the same. This is probably why My Little Pony toys are still around today after more than 20 years of being popular children's toys.
