Brand Overview

The world of Disney was thought up and created by Walt Disney (1901-1966). He was an animator, producer, artist and director who invented the magical experience that still runs strong today. Disney is known everywhere, the most famous creations of all probably being the theme parks Disneyworld Orlando, Florida and Disneyland Paris. These theme parks contain rides, parades, restaurants and you can meet all the Disney characters; the experience is truly unforgettable and magical for children.

There have been so many films, books, toys and merchandise produced over the years that Disney is surely the most well known brand ever created. Films are still being watched and collected today, from the newer animations such as The Lion King and Mulan to the original classics like Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. Children continue to have Disney toys at the top of their Christmas lists and with so many products to choose from it's not surprising. The following are just a few you can purchase of Disney's merchandise: Nintendo 64, Play Station and Game Boy video games, dolls, action figures, cuddly toys, puzzles, lunchboxes, play sets, stationary, infant or toddler learning resources, books, vehicles, toy models, dressing up costumes and board games.

Disney History

Walt Disney started his creative journey in the 1920's where he began work on a number of projects. The very first film to be aired was Steamboat Willie in 1928 where the world was introduced to Mickey Mouse for the first time, probably the most famous of all the Disney characters. Soon after this during the 1930's the four other original characters came onto our screens; Minnie Mouse, Pluto, Goofy and Donald Duck who have been used in a number of other Disney films and cartoons since then.

The first of the Disney animation films was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs launched in 1937. This was shortly followed by Fantasia, Pinocchio, Dumbo and Bambi during the early 1940's. Cinderella was the next character introduced to us but not until 1950. 1951 - 1959 saw the release of Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp and Sleeping Beauty. The 60's and 70's brought us 101 Dalmatians, The Jungle Book, The Sword in the Stone and Robin Hood and the 80's brought us The Great Mouse Detective and The Little Mermaid. During the 90's Disney saw their potential and released more films during the decade than ever before. Favourites included; Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin, Toy Story, Pocahontas, Hercules, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Mulan. A number of films have been released since the turn of the century including, Monsters Inc, Lilo and Stitch, Atlantis and The Emperors new groove.

Characters

There are so many Disney characters it is hard to know where to begin. All the characters have things in common related to their appearance because illustrators who were inspired by the previous generation of drawers produced them. With the animals it is harder to pick things out as they all have different features and markings, but with the human illustrations you can always tell if Disney produced them. The Princesses are always beautiful and have huge beaming eyes and delicate lips. Their hair is one solid colour with darker lines to portray movement and detail. Each Princess almost always acquires a beautiful gown towards the end of the film, each one more stunning and detailed than the previous film. The Princes again are always handsome characters with large eyes, soft flowing hair and muscular bodies.

In a way Disney use their characters appearances to portray their personalities and roles within the film. If the girl is beautiful she is usually the main character and the Princess who is sweet, kind and innocent. Examples are Belle from Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella. Evil characters are portrayed by their ugly clothes, imperfect facial features and are often much taller individuals. Examples are the wicked Queen from Snow White and Jafar from Aladdin. If the leading male character is a Prince, he is a handsome young man with big hair, bright white teeth and a beautiful smile. Check out their brilliant toy of 2006 Disney Cars Fast Talkin McQueen.
