Pink Care Bear

The Care Bear idea was introduced in 1981, the main purpose behind the creation was to help children learn how to care for others and communicate certain feelings. Each bear is a different colour with a unique symbol and personality that represents a human feeling, for example, Funshine Bear represents the feeling of happiness. She has bright yellow fur and a smiling sunshine on her belly to portray brightness and happiness.

In this sense Care Bear toys were extremely clever because they were both educational and fun for kids to play with, therefore parents were eager to buy them without children having to ask! The idea of the Care Bears didn't stop with cuddly toy products; they became a popular brand introducing a television cartoon and a number of animated films. Merchandise such as bed duvets, stationary and posters were also popular products.

History of the Care Bears

The Care Bear characters were created in 1981 but it wasn't until 1983 that they were sold as individual teddy bears. Millions of them were sold during the eighties, many are still available to buy today and some are prizes at popular theme park stores. During 1985 Nelvana Ltd produced a TV series about the bears enabling kids to get to know the characters and find out about their personalities. The series was extremely popular but was only aired until 1988. In addition to this three films were created; The Care Bears Movie - released in 1985 just after the series began, The Care Bears Movie 2 - aired the following year in 1986. Finally in 1987 The Care Bears Adventure in Wonderland was released.

In 2002 Care Bears were launched into the market again selling even more products than in the past. Brand new Care Bears are currently being sold in a number of toyshops. They are much more interactive than the previous toy bears and provide ways to learn and read that are still fun.

Characters

The Original ten Care Bears everyone knew and loved were Tenderheart Bear (the leader), Love-A-Lot Bear, Wish Bear, Grumpy Bear, Bedtime Bear, Birthday Bear, Good Luck Bear, Friend Bear, Funshine Bear and Cheer Bear. Others were later introduced to join the original ten members, these included; True Heart Bear, Thanks-A-Lot Bear, Take Care Bear, Surprise Bear, Secret Bear, Share Bear, Laugh-A-Lot Bear, Harmony Bear, Grams Bear, Baby Hugs Bear, Baby Tugs Bear and many others. A range of cuddly toys called Care Bear Cousins was created shortly after, which were a group of different animals, mainly influenced by jungle favourites.

Appearance

The Care Bears are chubby little bears with unique characteristics and personalities; each bear has coloured fur all over and a white belly with their own special symbol in the middle. Their eyes are bright and give them a cheerful appearance and they each have a small heart shaped nose. Majority of the bears have a permanent fixed smile that immediately makes them look sweet, obviously characters such as Grumpy Bear did not have a smile. Instead he has a slight frown and a thundercloud on his belly to represent his grumpy mood.

Their small patch of spiky hair adds extra detail to the top of their heads, as do the coloured hearts on the soles of their feet. Their most distinctive and probably most adorable feature is their squashy potbellies each with a white center and unique symbol to represent their feeling.
