New Cabbage Patch Kid

In 1978, Xavier Roberts from Georgia created 'Little People' dolls (now known as Cabbage Patch Kids). Xavier formed the Original Appalachian Artworks Inc. (OAA) to produce the dolls with five of his friends. The legend goes that Xavier Roberts came across a magic cabbage patch and discovered Bunnybees sparkling cabbages with magical crystals. The magic crystals made lots of different kids appear from the cabbages, each with their own different character. Xavier decided to call them the Cabbage Patch Kids and built a hospital for them to stay in until someone adopts (buys) them. Babyland General Hospital is a real place and can be visited online or in person almost every day of the year.

Cabbage Patch kids come complete with adoption papers and there is 'Bath Camp' where original Cabbage Patch Kids can be sent for a clean! Some owners even swear an oath to love their new kids!'Original' Cabbage Patch Kids are made completely from cloth and range from 6" to 27". They were an instant success from the beginning - Xavier dreamt up a different cabbage patch storyline for each doll, making every doll unique and increasing their appeal.

Different eye colours, hair colour and style, ethnic group, sex, freckles, dimples, teeth and shape of mouth could originally be chosen to make each Cabbage Patch Kid a new creation; little girls everywhere wanted a Cabbage Patch Kid when they were first introduced. Xavier Roberts signature was included on each doll's bottom, the ink colour changing most years. The Cabbage Patch Kids even have their own 'Cabbage Patch Kids Collectors Club!', which entitles members to benefits such as adopting the Members Only Edition, a years free subscription to the newsletter etc.

The Cabbage Patch Kids phenomenon took the world by storm; every little girl seemed to want their own unique hand sewn doll when they first appeared. In the 1980's the Cabbage Patch Kids were a $2 billion brand, stores couldn't stock enough to keep up with the demand! Over 100 million Cabbage Patch Kids have been purchased and alhough their popularity has inevitably declined compared with the phenomenon of the 1980's, Cabbage Patch Kids remain a popular toy.

Since the introduction of the 'original' dolls, the Cabbage Patch Kids have been mass-produced with vinyl faces; unfortunately these dolls cannot visit Bath Camp. The dolls were first mass-marketed by The Coleco Toy Company in 1983 and then in 1989 Hasbro took over the licensing agreement with Coleco and launched several new lines. Mattel then began marketing and producing the Cabbage Patch Kids in 1995 and still make them today. Many of today's dolls are all vinyl, with swivel heads, arms and legs, just like a regular doll. However original Cabbage Patch Kids can still be purchased, clearly at a more expensive price.

Each doll comes with a birth certificate and adoption papers that you must sign and promise to take care of them. The certificates are beautiful with the brand logo at the top and the cabbage patch kids name on.

Appearance

Original Cabbage Patch Kids are made completely from cloth and each have different features that must be chosen (e.g. eye colour, nose shape, hair style etc) to ensure each doll is unique. They all have a friendly, loveable appearance, with big cheeks and button eyes. All hair colours, eye colours, dimples, freckles etc are different depending on the chosen doll; the appeal is their uniqueness. Some have open arms, whereas others don't. Most people either love or hate Cabbage Patch Kids, however judging by their demand in recent years it's most likely the former. Though it may be easy to see how some people do find the little people's appearance a tad strange!

Later versions of Cabbage Patch Kids had vinyl heads, this made mass production easier, which was more practical considering the huge demand for the dolls. This did however mean that the unique appeal of the dolls weakened and Cabbage Patch Kids became more similar to regular dolls. The demand for the mass produced vinyl head Cabbage Patch Kids proved that young children still loved the little people though! New Cabbage Patch Kids Babies are now available.
