Barney

Barney
Barney and Friends is one of the most popular preschool shows today and is viewed in over 100 countries. With a broadcast contract with PBS being signed for forty new episodes until 2007, Barney and Friends look as though they're here to stay! Barney teaches young children about sharing, caring, friendship, respect and self-esteem and gets them to have fun while they're doing it! Barney's friend Baby Bop and her brother BJ join Barney in his show, as a do a whole cast of culturally diverse children. Each episode teaches its audience about educational concepts such as language and social interaction – but Barney makes learning fun so children want to get off their feet and join in with him and his friends!

The songs that Barney and Friends sing are presented in a simple, repetitive way – which helps children to remember what they've learnt. Child development experts help with the story themes, scripts and production to ensure the material remains appropriate from preschoolers and an educational specialist is always on set to offer guidance. Barney's adventures, stories, songs and games have bought hours of entertainment into the homes of many. Children between the ages of two and eight are the biggest Barney fans – but the cuddly, purple dinosaur is known worldwide. The lyrics to Barney's favourite song will also be recognised by most; I love you, You love me, We're a happy family, With a great big hug and a kiss from me to you, Wont you say you love me too.

Barney's background

Barney was created in 1987 by Sheryl Leach, a former teacher who wanted to produce entertaining, educational videos for preschool children. With the help of Kathy Parker, another former teacher, and Dennis DesShazer, a video producer, the first Barney home videos were released in 1988. Originally the main character was going to be a cuddly bear, but Sheryl Leach's son became fascinated with dinosaurs and so the character was changed into a big, cuddly, purple dinosaur. The videos were sold to toy and video stores across the country and in 1991 a little girl called Leora Rifkin rented a copy of the video. Leora's dad happened to be Larry Rifkin, the executive vice president of programming for Connecticut Public Television, and seeing how excited his daughter was with her new video, Larry invited Sheryl Leach to put Barney on public TV. In 1982 Barney & Friends made its first debut on PBS and soon became the most popular preschool show. Lyric Studios, a U.S. based company, owns and produces Barney and Friends and in 2001 they joined up with HIT Entertainment, a UK based company.

Character Appearance's

Barney

Barney is a big, cuddly, purple dinosaur. The costume is simple – with just a green belly to break up the rest of his purple body. Barney has two big eyes right at the top of his head and a huge smiling mouth with bright white teeth. He has two purple arms that stick out from the centre of his body and two stumpy legs with white claws. Barney often carries a bag of goodies known as the Barney Bag.

BJ

BJ is a cuddly, yellow dinosaur with a horn sticking out the centre of his head. He has a big round face with cute little spots on each cheek. He has a smiling mouth too, but not as big as Barney's! BJ has a green belly too and purple spots on both legs. His arms are more realistically placed than Barney's and he wears cute red and white trainers on his feet.

Baby Bop

Baby Bop is a cuddly, green dinosaur with a purple belly. She looks sweet with her matching purple bow in her hair and long eyelashes. She has pointy ears and a big smiling mouth. On her feet she wears purple shoes and her body is covered with matching purple spots. Baby Bop is always seen carrying her yellow blanky – which makes her look innocent and very sweet.

There is always a whole cast of culturally diverse children to accompany Barney, BJ and Baby Bop on their show too.

why does baby bop have ears? Dinosaurs didn't have "cow" ears like she does. She has mammal-style ears. That's just weird.
